Shanghai seeks to tap German prowess

GERMAN manufacturers can tap opportunities that Shanghai offers under the national “Made in China 2025” plan as the city is set to play a key role to help turn China into an advanced technological nation, a forum heard yesterday.

“Shanghai is to become a base of advanced manufacturing and will play a key role in China’s new initiative of turning into a stronger manufacturer,” Vice Mayor Zhou Bo said at the “Manufacturing Industry Dialogue — New Opportunities for China and Germany” forum hosted by the Shanghai Foreign Investment Development Board.

He said Shanghai and German companies have a lot to “share and cooperate” under the “Made in China 2025” plan.

The plan aims to transform China from a manufacturing giant into a world manufacturing power over 10 years. Ten sectors, including high-end computerized machinery and robotics, aerospace equipment, renewable-energy cars and biological medicine, are the focus. Li Yaoxin, director of the Shanghai Commission of Economy and Information Technology Development, said the city provides German companies with opportunities in high-end manufacturing, recycling, information technology, automotive and life sciences.

Hans-Peter Lentes, member of the board at the Fraunhofer Institute for Industrial Engineering, said Germany can share with Shanghai on how to make factories smarter and efficient to lower output costs.

Germany launched its “Industry 4.0” initiative in 2013 which aims to digitalize industries and integrate human and machines more intelligently.
