Otis is to train more elevator mechanics

Elevator maker Otis opened its first technical training center in the Chinese mainland last week in Hunan Province, aming to develop high-quality, professional service mechanics to meet the growing demand in the Chinese elevator market.

The launch of the Otis Technical Training Center in Xiangtan also marked the start of the Otis Technical Training Center Program in China.

According to the program, more than 4,000 students and mechanics will be trained each year under a collaboration between Otis Elevator Management and the Hunan Electrical College of Technology.

“The Otis Technical Training Center is part of Otis’ focus on expanding service infrastructure in China to better serve our customers and raise service standards in the elevator industry as a whole,” said President of Otis China Perry Zheng.

“We are also setting an industry benchmark which we hope will help enhance elevator and escalator service quality in China,” Zheng added.

The training program will consist of a three-year program collaboration with more than 20 institutions and academies, and has specific teaching for both students (including college graduates) and for workers in the mechanic sector.

For students, the program will provide a job-focused internship that will include real-world maintenance work, as well as resources and facilities for a hands-on training. On the other hand, the program also is focused on current mechanics who seek to upgrade their skills and knowledge.

Digitalisation is also a great highlight in the company. Through the Otis Eagle Service that will equip mechanics with mobile phones, a management system for tall buildings and a management system providing service to Metro rail customers. Otis is working in the development of digital tools for engineers and managers to improve quality and efficiency in their services, along with Microsoft and AT&T.

This training center is the first of many that Otis is planning to open in Hangzhou, Tianjin, Chengdu and Zhengzhou.
