Covestro partners with Tongji to set up an academy

GERMAN-BASED chemicals producer Covestro inaugurated an academy with Tongji University today to develop new materials in buildings and transport.

The academy, named "Covestro-Tongji Innovation Academy," will be sponsored by Covestro with 2.3 million yuan (US$336,600) annually in the five years to come (2017-2021), and will "help commercialize research results covering architecture and transport," said Markus Steilemann, Covestro's board member for innovation.

The deal grew from the company's five-year partnership with the university between 2011 and 2016, which focused on energy saving studies on buildings.

The academy will help boost applications on electric cars and new materials to cars' carbon emissions, which would support the development of China's fast-growing automobile market, said Yu Zhuoping, a professor specialized in car research at Tongji University.
