iPhone 6 to go on sale in mainland October 17
APPLE Inc announced today that its latest iPhone 6 will go on sale on Chinese mainland on October 17 after the US tech giant won a key network access permit from the Chinese government.
The 4.7 inch iPhone 6 is priced at 5,288 yuan (US$867) for the 16GB mode, 6,088 yuan for the 64GB model and 6,888 yuan for a new 128GB model, while the 5.5 inch iPhone 6 Plus came at 6,088 yuan for the 16GB model, 6,888 yuan for the 64GB model and 7,788 yuan for the 128GB model, Apple said in a statement.
The devices will be available at Apple Online Store, Apple’s retail stores and authorized resellers, and retrial stores of China’s three major carriers- China Mobile, China Telecom and China Unicom.
Customers can place orders on Apple’s online store beginning October 10 and can reserve the new iPhones for in-store pick-up on October 14, said the statement.
“We are thrilled to bring iPhone 6 and iPhone 6 Plus to our customers in China on all three carriers at launch,” Apple’s CEO Tim Cook said in the statement. “iPhone 6 and iPhone 6 Plus customers will have access to high-speed mobile networks from China Mobile, China Telecom and China Unicom for an incredible experience.”
The announcement came hours after the Ministry of Industry and Information Technology said on its website that it has granted a network access license to the latest smartphones after Apple addressed potential risks of personal information leaking and promised to further enhance security and privacy protection.
Safety tests found information leaking possibilities in three background programs and Apple has taken measures in the iOS 8 system to eliminate the risks, the ministry said.
The ministry said Apple has promised it never, and will never, set up a so-called “backdoor” on any products or services with any government agencies.
The approval removed the final regulatory barrier for Apple to sell its new devices on Chinese mainland after it acquired two regulatory approvals earlier this month.
Apple debut the new iPhones on September 19 in ten markets including the US, Japan and Hong Kong, and added another 20 markets a week later.
Its delay on Chinese mainland market fuelled a frenzy of Apple fans trying to buy the devices from overseas market or from the country’s black market.
As of September 25, Shanghai’s customs officials have seized 691 iPhone 6 and iPhone 6 Plus that were believed to be smuggled into China’s mainland.
