ZTE to double sales to 20m units in US

ZTE Corp aims to double sales to 20 million units in the US market this year, the Chinese telecommunication company said yesterday.

ZTE planned to surpass LG to become the No. 3 US smartphone vendor within two or three years, employing a combination of sports promotion and celebrity endorsement, said Cheng Lixin, chief executive of ZTE North America region.

“It doesn’t make sense to expand overseas if you lose in the US market, the most important and influential regional market,” Cheng said in Shanghai.

ZTE took 7.4 percent share of the US market by the end of the second quarter, behind Samsung, Apple and LG, according to the US-based research firm Strategy Analytics. The Chinese firm was only 3 percentage points behind LG.

Cheng said ZTE expects to double sales in US market to 20 million units in 2014 from last year. The volume will account for a half of total overseas sales this year.

China-brand phones, including Huawei and Lenovo, have gained awareness and market shares globally. They occupied 25 percent of the global phone market by the end of first quarter of this year, analysts said.
