ZTE taps Japan to help sell 60m handsets globally
ZTE Corp aims to expand sales in markets in the Asia-Pacific, especially in Japan, to meet its global target of selling 60 million smartphones in 2015, China’s biggest listed telecommunications equipment maker said yesterday.
The global sales figure for this year marks a 25 percent rise from last year. In the Asia-Pacific, it plans to sell 10 million units mainly by growing in the Japanese market.
“Japan will become our next sales growth engine after China and the United States,” said Zeng Xuezhong, chief executive of ZTE’s mobile business.
In Japan, ZTE partners NTT Resonant to sell handsets. ZTE spends US$500 million on annual procurement in Japan from firms like Sony and Sharp.
The Shenzhen-listed firm launched a mid-end smartphone called Blade in Japan priced from US$200 to US$300. The device features 5-inch display, 13-megapixel camera and ZTE-developed gesture control features.
In 2014, ZTE’s net profit surged 94 percent year on year due to rising demand for 4G network equipment and high profit margins from growing sales of smartphones overseas.
The overseas smartphone markets provide ZTE with higher profit margins, according to analysts.
