Viruses and malware hit over 25m users

OVER 25 million Chinese mobile phone users were affected by online payment-related spyware and there were about 326,000 kinds of newly created mobile payment malware last year, an industry report showed.

Last year, more than 16.7 million smartphone-related viruses or malicious software emerged, according to the online payment “black industry” report released by Tencent.

Everyday an average of 600,000 people connect to public Wi-Fi which puts users at a potential safety risk. Smartphone users’ online identities are increasingly vulnerable to be stolen and used to siphon money or data since more than 70 percent of users use an identical username and password for different online services, the report said.

The booming mobile payment services have created new forms of online scam where swindlers pretend to be friends or colleagues of victims. They then send links via social media platforms or online messaging services to steal personal information and bank accounts, or spy on user activities and access sensitive information.
