VR devices, selfie drones spur interest

COMPANIES taking part in GMIC, an annual tech fair held in Beijing, are scouting for opportunities in selfie drones and virtual reality devices.

They include Qualcomm, HTC and Sina, which hope the sales of drones and VR devices in China will help to counter the slowing or even flat growth of smartphone sales, Shanghai Daily learned at the Global Mobile Internet Conference yesterday.

Hover Camera, a drone with 13-megapixel camera that features selfie photography and is able to hover, attracted the attention of visitors at the fair.

Besides offering chips to smartphone makers, US-based Qualcomm has expanded into 25 industries in China to tap opportunities in smart city, health care, drone, wearable computing, smart car and VR.

HTC, which lost market share in the smartphone business, showed off its latest VR system, HTC Vive, at the event.
