Tmall upgrades international platform to attract foreign retailers
TMALL said today it has upgraded the international section on its website as the business-to-consumer (B2C) unit under e-commerce giant Alibaba Group aims to bring more overseas products to Chinese buyers.
Under a pilot cross-border e-commerce settlement scheme that's available in six cities, Tmall vendors will be able to ship to domestic buyers at a much quicker pace.
Only certified overseas retailers or distributors can open stores on Tmall International and they will use Cainiao Network's logistics network to put their goods inside the bonded area in six cities including Shanghai, Ningbo, Zhengzhou, Chongqing, Hangzhou and Guangzhou. Currently more than 1,000 vendors have jointed the program.
Buyers that shop at overseas websites could wait weeks for their packages to be delivered to domestic warehouse and go through customs clearance procedures.
Tmall has seen huge demand for imported consumer goods such as infant formula and diapers as it has gained data from the large number of search queries users made on Taobao and Tmall.
Tmall is also offering to cut the logistics charges and management fees inside the bonded areas to encourage vendors to open official storefronts on Tmall International.
