Tencent introduces new WeChat rules to prevent scams
TENCENT said it has launched a new set of rules to prevent WeChat account users from sending advertising links that may cheat other.
Some corporate WeChat accounts have encouraged users to share links and gather the number of "likes" they get from their friends on Moments, a similar function to Facebook's timeline, so that they can join a lucky draw for prizes such as tour packages.
However some of these are fraudulent links that requested the personal information of users, who may unknowingly expose themselves to criminals seeking to make use of their information for online scams.
In some scams uncovered by Tencent, several WeChat corporate accounts had asked users to pay mailing fees by pretending they were going to send gifts won in a lucky draw.
Tencent said it will ban corporate WeChat accounts if it is found sending spam links after the fourth warning.
Tencent said this type of marketing has hurt the user experience.
It has already banned nearly 30,000 official accounts that sold fake goods since WeChat’s launch. Tencent said each day it removes an average of 10 million spam links.
Last month, Tencent also said it may limit each WeChat user to 5,000 contacts to stop the spread of spam.
