Shanghai eyes Internet speed of 1Gbps

SHANGHAI will become the first city on the Chinese mainland to boast broadband connection which can transfer data at speed of up to 1 gigabits per second (Gbps) in residential neighborhoods by the end of 2018.

China Telecom’s Shanghai branch yesterday said its high-speed fiber optic broadband network would enhance and offer a wide range of Internet-based services for ordinary consumers through their smart home appliances.

By the end of this year, 269 residential areas in Shanghai will be covered by the 1Gbps connection. By the end of 2017, Shanghai Telecom broadband users can expect their average bandwidth to double to 100 megabits per second from the current level. So users can download a 2-gigabyte high-definition movie in 16 seconds on the 1Gbps broadband connection.

On Thursday, the city government signed a strategic deal with China Telecom to boost Shanghai as a role model for Internet Plus initiatives and relevant applications. The carrier plans to invest 27 billion yuan (US$4 billion) in the city during the 13th Five-Year (2016-2020) Plan period.
