Record growth of mobile Internet users
MORE than 83.4 percent of Chinese netizens accessed Internet by mobile phones in the first half of this year, surpassing that of personal-computer users (80.9 percent) for the first time, a state-level Internet research firm said yesterday.
China’s mobile Internet user base soared, reaching 527 million by the end of June — 27 million more than six months ago, according to the China Internet Network Information Center (CNNIC).
The country’s Internet population reached 632 million, increasing 14 million in the first half, according to CNNIC.
The immense popularity of the mobile internet was largely due to applications for shopping, travel and games.
Online financing was the emerging new star application in the cyber space with more than 10 percent penetration rate among more than 600 million Chinese netizens.
“Smartphones’ popularity and enriched services have boosted the development of the mobile Internet in China,” CNNIC said in a statement.
CNNIC, which is seen as a national Internet research authority, releases Internet user base and latest trends in the cyber space twice a year.
Shopping, travel booking, online coupon and games were the most popular mobile applications in China because they require mobility, calculation and location information and abilities, analysts said.
By June, China had 368 million mobile game users, accounting for 58.2 percent of the total mobile users, compared with 54.7 percent by the end of 2013.
The debut of 4G services with high-speed network for mobile users have boosted demand for services like video and games on handset.
Internet finance, which debuted just a year ago, had attracted more than 63.8 million users by June, accounting for 10 percent of the total netizens. It offers people an easy way to manage personal wealth with relatively high returns.
