Nokia back with new smartphone

NOKIA returned to the smartphone market by releasing its first Android-powered model, Nokia 6, in Beijing yesterday.

Finland-based HMD, which owns the Nokia brand, formerly the world’s top mobile phone brand, launched the 1,699 yuan (US$245) Nokia 6 with features including Qualcomm Inc’s chip, 16-megapixel camera and 64-gigabyte storage.

HMD will release more Nokia-brand products in the first half of 2017, the company said in a statement.

Nokia promised to stay out of the smartphone market until the end of 2016 after Microsoft bought the company’s smartphone business for US$7.2 billion in 2014. In May, Microsoft sold the brand’s feature phone business to HMD Global and FIH Mobile for US$350 million.
