Meizu aims sales rise, growth in India

MEIZU, which attracted a US$650 million investment from Alibaba in February, aims to sell more smartphones at affordable prices and also expand overseas, especially in India, this year.

Meizu sold five million smartphones in the first quarter, equal to the whole year’s sales in 2014, and sales of 20 million smartphones were likely this year.

The company launched a new flagship model MX5 in Beijing, featuring an eight-core chip, fingerprint recognition and fast charging, with prices starting from 1,799 yuan (US$290).

“The MX5 sales will surpass those of MX4 by 30 to 40 percent with reasonable prices and good design,” said Bai Yongxiang, Meizu’s president.

Meizu also sells entry-level handsets of under 1,000 yuan as it aims to grab market share from Xiaomi and Huawei.

Meizu will also grow in overseas markets like India where its sales are expected to grow 30 percent this year.
