Lenovo eyes website for e-commerce

LENOVO Group Ltd plans to open an e-commerce website to sell smart devices including handsets and routers as the world’s biggest computer maker joins rivals by expanding into mobile Internet.

“It will be another Lenovo with independent brands and management teams,” said Lei Ting, Lenovo’s vice president, who expected the website to debut in April.

The new website will sell products such as Lenovo S90 handset and a wireless router co-developed by Lenovo and Baidu as well as other “exciting” smart devices, said Lei.

Chinese consumer electronics companies, such as Xiaomi and Huawei, are boosting investment in self-operated online brand stores rather than depend on third-party platforms like JD.com and TMall.

They hope their stores will increase brand awareness and help expand their distribution channels, analysts said.

Lenovo aims to generate profits from mobile Internet and enterprise business, Chairman Yang Yuanqing said in a conference call to unveil third-quarter results last month.

The company’s third-quarter net profit increased 19 percent to US$262.1 million.
