Iris scanning to be part of smartphones

IRIS and facial recognition features will be used in smartphones in China as technology develops, participants at the Mobile World Congress Shanghai said yesterday.

Compared with fingerprinting and other security features, iris-scanning offers a higher level of security and is already being used in applications like e-bank and online shopping services in China.

Optical sensors have been integrated with advanced mobile technology, which can be widely used in devices like smartphones and VR (virtual reality) gadgets, said Bodo Ischebeck, vice president of Osram Opto Semiconductor.

Iris and facial recognition sensors enable new methods for interaction with mobile devices.

Additional features like eye tracking can create an even more fluid user experience on smartphone and VR devices, said Osram, which offers components and sensors in the industry.

Fujitsu has launched smartphones with iris recognition in Japan, which were demonstrated at the forum.

The technology will soon be available in models of Samsung and China brands, which are actively implementing it, said Ischebeck, who said “light is security” of the future.
