High-tech road for food safety in China

FOOD safety in China is going high tech as food producers are using advanced technologies including wireless certification and non-erasable printing materials, Shanghai Daily learned during a technology trade fair in the city yesterday.

Shanghai plans to establish a city-level food safety platform which allows regulators and consumers to track back processes from food production, transport and sales, said system provider Shanghai-based Inesa.

The system uses analytical instruments, radio frequency identification intelligent module and a mobile application, Inesa officials said at its booth during the Third China (Shanghai) Technology Fair which ends at the Shanghai World Expo Exhibition and Convention Center today.

Other local firms are also upgrading to “Internet Plus” as part of the city’s economic transformation, according to the Shanghai Commission of Economy and Information Technology.

The exhibition also saw China Hi-Tech Anti-Counterfeit Group Ltd showcasing non-erasable inks and printing materials, which are used on packages of milk giant Mengniu and China’s biggest pork provider Shuanghui.

“The key information of the products are printed with our non-erasable materials. Therefore, people can’t sell expired food by changing the printed date on packages,” said Wang Dan, the firm’s sales manager.
