Demand to fuel more cloud data centers

ALIBABA Cloud will establish two new data centers in India and Indonesia to serve the booming demand for cloud services, the company said yesterday.

The two new centers in Mumbai and Jakarta are expected to be operational by the end of March 2018.

“Establishing data centers in India and Indonesia will further strengthen our position in the region and across the globe,” said Simon Hu, senior vice president of Alibaba Group and president of Alibaba Cloud.

“I believe Alibaba Cloud is uniquely positioned with cultural and contextual advantages to provide innovative data intelligence and computing capabilities to customers in Asia.”

Its overseas partners, including India’s Reliance Communications’ subsidiary Global Cloud Xchange and Tata Communications, will allow local businesses access to its service network.

Alibaba Group’s cloud computing arm will sharply increase its computing resources in Asia following the announcement earlier this year of a new data center in Malaysia to provide greater support for cloud capabilities for the region’s small and medium enterprises.

Alibaba Cloud will expand its number of data center locations to 17, covering China’s mainland, Australia, Germany, Japan, Hong Kong, Singapore, the United Arab Emirates and the US.

Revenue in China’s public cloud market is set to hit US$3.8 billion by 2020, said Forrester Research.
