Decision on Qualcomm expected soon

CHINA’S anti-monopoly regulator said yesterday it was close to making a decision on Qualcomm Inc, the world’s biggest mobile chip designer, which has been investigated for more than a year.
The National Development and Reform Commission held the seventh round of talks with Qualcomm and will make a decision in line with Chinese law, the commission said on its website yesterday.
Anti-monopoly head Xu Kunlin held several meetings with Qualcomm President Derek Aberle — the last one on Wednesday — the NDRC said.
Qualcomm is being probed for overcharging and abusing its market position in wireless communication standards. If proved, it could be hit with record fines of more than US$1 billion.
Qualcomm, whose clients include top Chinese handset vendors Xiaomi Corp, Huawei Technologies and Lenovo Group Ltd, earned 49 percent of its global revenue in China, or US$12.29 billion for the year ending on September 29.
Qualcomm confirmed the meeting with NDRC officials but declined to comment yesterday. The American global semiconductor company plans to increase its investment in China, the world’s biggest mobile phone market.
In July, it announced a new investment fund of US$150 million in China that will focus on local startup companies dealing in mobile technologies.
China’s mobile connection device number will hit 1 billion units in 2017, compared to 500 million in 2013.
