Deal accesses all Amazon’s sites

CHINESE consumers will be able to buy products directly from Amazon’s international websites from the fourth quarter thanks to a deal announced yesterday between the e-commerce giant and two local partners.

The United States-based company said it has signed agreements with the China (Shanghai) Pilot Free Trade Zone and Shanghai Information Investment Ltd (SII) to develop the first cross-border e-commerce market on China’s mainland.

The arrangement will give consumers access to all products available through Amazon’s overseas sites and allow Chinese sellers to access the company’s global customer base.

“China’s e-commerce market is one of the most dynamic in the world and has tremendous potential,” said Diego Piacentini, senior vice president of Amazon International.

Under the new deal, consumers will be able to access a world of products through SII’s cross-border platform. Goods ordered via the system are expected to take seven to 10 days to deliver, SII said.

Chinese consumers, especially in major cities, prefer to buy products such as milk powder, baby care items and luxury watches overseas, as a result of food scandals and unreasonable high prices in the domestic market.

The cooperation agreement is likely to help Amazon boost its share of China’s e-commerce market, which is dominated by Alibaba’s Tmall and JD.com, analysts said. In the second quarter, China’s online B2C (business to consumer) market size reached 320 billion yuan (US$52 billion), growing 72 percent year on year. Amazon China had 7.85 million users, behind Tmall with 98 million, JD.com with 41 million and Dangdang.com’s 9.2 million, said Analysys International.

Also yesterday, Citic Press Group signed a deal to sell Amazon’s Kindle e-readers at 33 of its airport bookstores in seven cities, including Beijing and Hangzhou.
