Date set for latest iPhone’s mainland debut
APPLE’S latest iPhones will go on sale on the Chinese mainland on October 17 after they were granted a network access license.
The Ministry of Industry and Information Technology said yesterday Apple had addressed the potential risks of personal information leakage and had promised to further enhance security and privacy protection.
Tests had found three background programs at risk of leaking information but Apple had taken measures to eliminate them, the ministry said.
In a document submitted to the ministry, Apple said the company would not be allowed to “interfere with” any personal information without clients’ approval, and it had already taken measures in its ios8 system to make it even more difficult for anybody to use what it described as “diagnostic tools” maliciously.
The ministry said it paid great attention to protecting mobile phone users’ personal information and would strengthen security management of mobile phones.
The ministry will also enhance network access security reviews as well as supervision and inspection of products that are already licensed, saying any violation of regulations on personal information protection will be investigated and punished.
Earlier this year, Apple faced accusations by Chinese Central Television that the location service on the iPhone could allow the company to steal secrets and threaten national security.
The company denied it worked with any foreign governments to create “backdoor access” and said location data stays in the phone.
Apple said Chinese mainland customers will be able to pre-order phones at its online store from October 10 and in its stores from October 14.
On October 17 the devices will also be available at authorized resellers, and from the retail outlets of China Mobile, China Telecom and China Unicom.
The iPhone 6 will cost from 5,288 yuan (US$867) for the basic 16GB model, while the bigger iPhone 6 Plus starts at 6,088 yuan.
The new phones made their debut on September 19 in 10 markets including the United States, Japan and Hong Kong, and added another 20 markets a week later.
