Chinese smartwatch market set to grow
APPLE Inc’s debut of its watch in April is set to spark consumer demand for smartwatches in China, Shanghai Daily learned yesterday.
There are a total of 85 types of smartwatches sold on Chinese IT retailing website JD.com, which marks a great potential of the “wrist-on device” market in China, said Xu Peng, chief executive of wearable computing business of Shanghai startup firm Geak, the earliest smartwatch developer in China.
The market will grow rapidly this year with the debut of Apple Watch in April, analysts said.
“It gives China’s watch and IT industries a new change to attract young consumers and establish brand (awareness),” Xu told a smartwatch forum yesterday held by the China Horologe Association.
Geak debuted second-generation round smartwatches with luxurious designs, which cost from 1,999 yuan (US$320). Beijing-based InWatch launched several well-designed smartwatches with health management features.
