Chinese lead globally in Internet use

CHINESE consumers lead the world in the use of Internet applications on social, Internet browser and online shopping sectors, industry officials told an IT forum held yesterday in Shanghai.

More than 48 percent of Chinese Internet users have tried online shopping, ahead of the 33 percent in the United States and the UK’s 28 percent. On Internet browsing, China shares the honor with US at 71 percent. On social media, China at 63 percent trails slightly behind the US figure of 65 percent, according to research firm Nielsen.

China has established itself as a “Mega Web” covering mobile connectivity, sharing economy and device intelligence, Lau Seng Yee, Tencent’s senior executive vice president, told the Mind Conference 2014.

The popularity of 4G services fuels video and sharing demand on smartphones in China, which generates a huge opportunity for digital marketing in the world’s biggest mobile phone market, said John Burbank, president of Nielsen Global Strategic Initiative. Meanwhile China Telecom also plans to expand 4G services to another 24 cities.
