China’s game revenue ranks No. 1 worldwide

CHINA’S game industry revenue grew more than fourfold in the past five years to rank No. 1 globally as sales of homegrown developed games and game exports boomed, top industry officials said during the opening forum of Chinajoy yesterday.

Cross-industry integration, new technologies like virtual reality, home digital entertainment and e-sports are new growth engines of the industry, speakers told the forum.

In 2015, China’s game industry posted a revenue of 140.7 billion yuan (US$21 billion), 4.35 times compared with five years ago, garnering the “top position globally,” said Sun Shoushan, vice chairman of the State Administration of Press, Publication, Radio, Film and Television, the industry regulator.

Sales of self-developed games accounted for 70 percent of the domestic market by 2015, 10 percentage points higher than that five years ago. Game exports surged 87 percent annually on average between 2010 and 2015, Sun told the summit.

The five-day Chinajoy, the country’s biggest game show, has attracted about 1,000 exhibitors from over 30 countries and regions.

LeEco, which just bought US-based TV maker Vizio for US$2 billion, unveiled its strategy to expand into digital entertainment that will offer users integrated home digital entertainment services on TV screens and related accessories like wireless game sticks and remote-connected guns for games.
