China sales of iPhones thump US
APPLE Inc’s iPhone sales in China surpassed those of the United States for the first time in the first quarter of this year as domestic demand grew fueled by increased sales channels and the Spring Festival, the US giant said yesterday.
Apple, whose revenue climbed 27 percent to US$58 billion globally, said its iPhone sales by units surged 70 percent in China, making the country its world’s largest iPhone market, said Luca Maestri, chief financial officer of Apple, who didn’t give detailed figures.
The larger-screen iPhone 6 and iPhone 6 Plus became popular as Chinese New Year’s gifts in February.
Apple’s total revenue in China surged 71 percent to US$16.8 billion in the quarter, surpassing Europe to become the company’s second-biggest regional market by revenue, only behind the US.
In the middle of 2016, Apple is expected to have 40 retail stores in China, almost double from 21 now, according to Tim Cook, Apple’s chief executive.
