China Telecom’s new IoT platform

CHINA Telecom launched a global IoT (Internet of Things) platform today in Shanghai, covering regions involved in “Belt and Road” initiative as the carrier aimed to grab business opportunities of IoT used in a wider range.

Having more than 5,000 IoT clients and partners now, China Telecom plans to start commercial use of the new IoT network globally this week. It will cover the whole world after offering the services in the “Belt and Road” regions initially.

The IoT applications have been increasingly used in consumer electronics and personal areas like smart cars, robots and drones, compared with in industrial and professional areas previously. More than 4.7 billion IoT devices will be connected worldwide by carriers in 2020, seven times compared with that in 2015, according to China Telecom.

China Telecom has found many partners, including overseas carriers, chip design and equipment makers like Ericsson, to offer the platform with unified operating system and reliable data services.
