China Telecom launches 4G services

CHINA Telecom launched 4G phones and services today in 16 mainland cities including Shanghai, which made the city have 4G networks built by all three major carriers, the carrier said.

China Telecom offered 15 4G models made by firms including Huawei and Coolpad. It expected to provide 75 4G models by the end of this year, according to Shanghai branch of China Telecom.  It cost users 49 yuan (US$7.8) to 599 yuan each month for various packages.

China Telecom’s new 4G phone numbers started with 177. Current users can subscribe to new 4G services with existing numbers.

The 4G networks, based on both TD-LTE and FDD-LTE, has covered 90 percent of the city. China Telecom plans to invest 4 billion yuan in 2014 and 2015 to lift the penetration rate to 98 percent.

Compared with bigger rivals China Mobile and China Unicom, China Telecom offered users combined services of 4G phones and broadband. It has more than 5 million family broadband users with over 90 percent market share in Shanghai.
