China Mobile’s 4G users to hit 150m in 2015

CHINA Mobile aims to triple the number of 4G users to 150 million in 2015 and will use spectrum resources of 2G to upgrade 4G networks, the world’s biggest mobile carrier said yesterday during a industry conference held in Shanghai.

China Mobile may boast 70 million 4G users by the end of this year, up from 50 million users now. The telco aims to have 150 million 4G users in 2015 and 300 million in 2016, Li Zhengmao, China Mobile’s vice president, told the Global MBB Forum yesterday.

“It’s still conservative expectations,” Li said. “We will transfer 2G spectrum resources for 4G network development.”

China will issue 4G FDD-LTE licenses and this is expected to boost demand for 4G networks, Zhang Feng, a senior official at the Ministry of Industry and Information Technology, told the forum, adding that China is “actively” pushing development of 5G.

The improved mobile broadband networks, covering both 4G and 5G, will contribute US$1.2 trillion to China’s economy by 2020, said a report issued yesterday by Huawei Technologies and industry alliance GSMA.
