Boom in online video user base

CHINA’S online video contents will create a market up to 20 billion yuan (US$3 billion) in 2017, thanks to paid users, mobile Internet traffic and value-added services such as game and e-commerce.

In 2017, China’s paid online video user base will hit 74 million, contributing a market value of 14 billion yuan to online video firms including Baidu-invested iQiyi, Alibaba-invested Youku Tudou and Suning-invested PPTV, iResearch, a Shanghai-based research firm, said at the Shanghai Online Video Industry Forum.

The market size will probably hit 20 billion yuan because of paid users and related services like social, broadcasting, e-commerce and game business, said Yang Xianghua, vice president of iQiyi.

Besides online video firms, carriers are also seeking opportunities in the video industry.

China Mobile now has more than 40 million paid users for Migu Video, a sub-brand of the country’s biggest mobile carrier with more than 800 million users.

Each click on video clips on Migu brings the firm an income of 2 yuan on average, Zhao Ying, vice president of Migu Video, told the forum yesterday.
