Alibaba picks Beijing as site for 2nd HQ
ALIBABA yesterday said it will launch a second headquarters in Beijing to strengthen business development in north China.
Beijing is traditionally a hotspot for Internet and telecommunications startup firms and a suitable city to drive synergies and collaboration among industry players, Alibaba said.
A number of Alibaba’s business units and affiliates also have their headquarters in Beijing, such as online mapping service AutoNavi, its mobile Internet unit UC Mobile, Ali Pictures and Alibaba Health.
Its logistics affiliate Cainiao Network operates 900 warehouses and 15,000 dispatch centers to cover lower-tier cities in the north.
Alibaba also said it will work with partners, including consumer goods producers and offline retailers, to build an integrated supply chain for consumers in the northern region.
Currently about a third of Alibaba’s 30,000 employees work at its Beijing office.
Hangzhou-based Alibaba’s move marks its focus to consolidate its market position beyond coastal regions.
Meanwhile, Alibaba said it would provide more subsidies to consumers including a sales campaign for Tmall’s shoppers from today.
