US firms to ease rise in investment

US companies in China will moderate their increase in investment in the country, a survey by the American Chamber of Commerce in Shanghai showed yesterday.

Around 67 percent of the respondents planned to increase investment for this year, while 28 percent said they will maintain investment at 2014 levels, according to the 2015 China Business Report by AmCham Shanghai based on an annual survey of 377 company executives.

“Among those companies with plans to increase investments in 2015, more of the increases are at lower levels,” the report said.

Last year, 96 percent of the respondents said they had kept or increased investments in their China operations.

Some 41 percent of respondents indicated an investment increase of 1 percent to 15 percent this year, and 21 percent of them signaled a rise of 16 percent to 50 percent.

The corresponding figures last year were that 36 percent indicated a 1-15 percent rise and 23 percent said a 16-50 percent gain — a clear sign that intention for larger investment has fallen, the report said.

The survey also showed 85 percent of the companies have an optimistic five-year outlook on business hopes in China.

However, 10 percent of them moved from the “optimistic” category to the “slightly optimistic” category, reflecting concerns such as the slowing Chinese economy, rising costs and perception of tightening regulation on foreign companies.

“Many foreign companies in China are starting to find themselves stuck between a slowing economy and a still challenging commercial environment,” said Kent Kedl, managing director for China at Control Risks, a consulting firm and a partner for the report.

“Many companies are growing at a slower rate and they still need to deal with the difficulties of the lack of transparency and corruption issues in China.”
