Time-honored brands get a wake-up call

SHANGHAI will unveil the “delist” measure to ensure time-honored brands are really up to scratch, an official with the Shanghai China Time-Honored Brands Association revealed yesterday.

Shao Yuling, secretary-general of the association, was speaking ahead of the China Time-Honored Brand & Famous Brand Expo, which opens on Friday at the Shanghai Exhibition Center.

“We are examining these brands and will strengthen their supervision. Also, the delist measure will be introduced soon for those under par,” Shao said, adding that the four-day expo will try to revive these brands among the younger generation.

The annual event is in the spotlight this year not for its 10th anniversary but for a recent Japanese media report complaining about the poor service at Laobanzhai, a local restaurant known as one of the city’s time-honored brands.

Laobanzhai suspended its business for five days earlier this month to improve its service after the report went viral on social media and triggered a wave of self-examination among such brand owners.

Shanghai certified 42 brands with the city’s time-honored title in 2013.
