Shanghai to promote online tax service

SHANGHAI’S tax authority aims to put 70 percent of its offline services online after it launches a system to allow cross-district tax processing, officials said yesterday.

Companies and individuals will benefit from an online system to be set up this year to handle tax issues cross-district, said Jiang Xutao, chief economist of the Shanghai Office of State Administration of Taxation.

“Currently the number of cases processed online amounts to only about 11 percent of our total business,” said Jiang. “There is a huge room to improve efficiency, relieve the pressure on offline service venues, and cut the cost of taxation.”

He vowed that efforts will be made to “promote our online system and improve functions, and we aim to lift the proportion of our online business to 70 percent in the near future.”

The number of tax issues that can be handled online will rise from 35 now to 41 by the end of this year, Jiang said.

Companies will be able to order blank invoices online, and the tax authority will deliver the invoices to them and help save time.

The tax authority this month upgraded the online and offline taxation systems that unified tax operation standards city-wide. It also improved data collection and sharing among various government departments.
