More consumers use mobile payments
MORE consumers are using mobile payment channels to pay for their purchases and their awareness of security has also increased, according to a China UnionPay report released yesterday.
As high as 61 percent of consumers have used such channels as Internet payment tools and near-field communication to pay for goods and services, a rise of 16 percentage points from a year ago, said UnionPay, the country’s sole bankcard transaction firm.
Meanwhile, 29 percent of consumers said they spent more than 2,000 yuan (US$323) online each month, up 6 percentage points from last year, the report said.
In addition, 58 percent of them have used mobile payment tools to pay for their credit bills and 36 percent made cross-bank transfers through mobile channels.
A total of 42 percent of consumers said mobile payment took more than half of their monthly online payments.
The online survey was conducted on 44,000 respondents in 34 provinces and cities from July to November.
The popularity of mobile payment has created an opportunity for cyber security criminals to exploit any risks and devise scams to cheat people, said a senior UnionPay official.
The wider adoption of mobile payment has brought forth safety risks as 10 percent of the respondents said they’ve encountered scams involving online transactions, up from 6 percent in 2013.
