Mainland a bit more competitive

THE Chinese mainland edged up in this year’s world ranking of competitiveness, with improvements in education and public expenditure, an IMD report said yesterday.

The mainland ranked 22nd in the annual world competitiveness rankings released by IMD, a business school in Switzerland.

It was up marginally from 23rd spot last year.

The rankings assessed factors including economic performance, government and business efficiency, as well as infrastructure in 61 economies.

The US remained top in business efficiency and diverse financial sector as well as its innovation drive and the effectiveness of its infrastructure. It was followed by Hong Kong in second and Singapore.

“Productivity and efficiency are in the driver’s seat of the competitiveness wagon,” said Arturo Bris, director of the IMD World Competitiveness Center.
