China to allow import of Aussie live cattle

CHINA will allow the import of live cattle from Australia and the countries’ free trade agreement has taken the relationship to a new level, Australia’s trade minister said yesterday.

The agreement for Australia to export live cattle to China will be finalized within a few months after technical details have been sorted out. Meanwhile, Chinese authorities have agreed to the health protocols for importing Australian live cattle.

In an interview with Shanghai Daily yesterday, Andrew Robb, minister for trade and investment, said: “The FTA has taken China and Australia’s relationship to a new level. The FTA has created a framework for business deals to be finalized and for decisions and problems to be addressed more quickly between the two countries.”

He added that Australian companies are leveraging Chinese e-commerce platforms “to get products directly to Chinese consumers.”

Wal-Mart’s wholly owned e-commerce unit Yihaodian yesterday unveiled a section for imported Australian goods with more than 300 kinds of fresh food and merchandise.

Yihaodian said it plans to add goods from countries including the United States, Thailand and Chile to those already from 12 nations.
