Chile eyes China trade in tech and services

CHILE seeks to develop its business ties with China to sectors such as services and technology as well as offering itself as a gateway to the vast South American market, Eduardo Frei, former Chilean president, said in Shanghai yesterday.
He invited Chinese companies to explore other markets in South America through Chile, which has strategic ties with China that “very few countries manage to establish.”
“Chile and China have a mature relation that dates back to more than 50 years ago,” Frei, also the Chilean ambassador at large for Asia-Pacific, told Shanghai Daily in an exclusive interview.
“We hope to advance the current commerce to a higher level of more than raw materials, wine and cherry ... one level that allows us to reach China’s services and technology, and we hope Chile can become a platform for Chinese companies to access the South American market.”
Frei called the opening of an office in Santiago, the capital, by China Construction Bank as “an important move” to facilitate Chinese investment in Chile. The office will start operation in March.
Frei also hopes to cooperate closely with China in education and technology such as telecommunications and satellites.
China has become Chile’s largest trading partner after a free trade agreement took effect in 2006.
Since then, Chilean exports to China have increased at an average 20.7 percent each year.
