Electricity use surges 2.5% for 1st two months

CHINA’S total electricity consumption for January and February rose 2.5 percent year on year, the National Energy Administration said on its website yesterday.

The first two months of this year saw the usage of 545.4 billion kilowatt-hours. In the primary industry, electricity consumption dropped 2.5 percent year on year, while it rose 1.5 percent in the secondary industry and was up 8.1 percent in the service industry.

The two-month period also saw the creation of an increased capacity of 13.42 million kilowatts, with hydroelectricity contributing 1.39 million KW and coal-fired electric power adding 7.87 million KW.

Wang Yumin, deputy director of the National Energy Administration, recently said the government intends to break up monopoly in the electricity sector where state-owned enterprises are dominant.

Wang said China will introduce a pricing mechanism in the electricity market and encourage private investors to invest in the country’s electricity production and sales business.
