Shift in growth of retail sales by regions
CHINA’S fast moving consumer goods sales growth slowed to 5.4 percent last year from 7.4 percent in 2013 while county-level retail sales grew 8.8 percent as a report yesterday showed a shift in growth pace in different regions of the country.
Sales volume at e-commerce channels grew by an annual 34 percent, compared with a 5.1 percent gain from modern sales channels such as hypermarket chains, supermarkets and convenience stores, market research company Kantar Worldpanel said in a report.
As high as 36 percent of Chinese shoppers nationwide have purchased from e-commerce channels last year, with the figure even higher at 51 percent in the four cities of Beijing, Shanghai, Guangzhou and Chengdu, according to purchasing behavioral study of 40,000 urban households tracked by Kantar Worldpanel.
Sun Art Group still grabbed the biggest market share of 8.6 percent among urban retailers.
The report also said 16 of the 24 new Wal-Mart stores opened in 2014 were outside of first-tier cities and provincial capitals, suggesting a bigger growth potential in lower-tier cities in future development of bricks-and-mortar stores.
