Poor to get free cancer treatment

A SWISS pharmaceutical company has teamed up with the China Charity Federation to provide free treatment to poor people suffering from lung cancer.
A spokesperson for Shanghai Roche Pharmaceuticals Ltd, a unit of Basel-based Roche Group, made the announcement on Saturday in Guangzhou, capital of south China’s Guangdong Province.
By next year, the company will make its “Avastin” — a drug used in the treatment of several cancers — available to cash-strapped patients in 150 cities across the country.
The drug has already been approved for use in 120 countries and has performed well in clinical trials, the company said.
According to figures from Roche, about 650,000 new lung cancer cases are reported in China every year.
The firm is keen to increase its presence in the country, and said recently that it plans to build a US$140 million research center at the Zhangjiang High-Tech Park in Shanghai.
