Irish food and drink exports set to surge

IRISH food and drink exports to China are set to surge 50 to 60 percent to 1 billion euros (US$1.1 billion) over three to five years amid rising demand, the Irish Food Board said yesterday.

The Irish exports to China are expected to exceed 700 million euros this year and reach 1 billion euros in three to five years, Aidan Cotter, chief executive of the board, said in an interview with Shanghai Daily yesterday.

Irish dairy exports to China are also set to grow 50 percent in the next four years amid Chinese demand for infant formula. This growth would enable Ireland to become a leading dairy supplier to China, the board, a state agency that promotes Irish food and horticulture overseas, said.

“We expect the growth pace to continue in terms of overall exports and Irish exports to China have diversified from dairy, pork, seafood and now expanding to beef,” Cotter said.

In 2015, total Irish food and drink exports to China surged 16 percent from a year ago to 612 million euros against an overall global growth rate of 3 percent.

China is also the second largest market for Irish exports of dairy products and pork.
