Food waste big asset for Insinkerator
US-BASED waste treatment company Insinkerator is tapping the China market by raising awareness among households about the benefits of garbage disposal units in sinks.
The company sells garbage disposal units for sinks that grind up food waste into tiny particles before they are washed into the sewage system. In commercial uses, the ground-up particles can be captured for processing into fertilizer or even methane gas for energy.
The Wisconsin-based firm has seen 30 percent of annual sales growth in the past five years in China. The company declined to reveal actual revenue last year, but said it was in the double-digit millions of dollars. China contributed to 15 percent of the company’s international sales.
Traditionally food waste in Chinese cities has been hauled to dumps on urban outskirts and incinerated. According to one official report, Shanghai produces around 1,000 tons of food waste every day. With the help of garbage disposal units, about four-fifths of the waste can be recycled for other uses, according to a 2010 survey conducted by Tongji University in cooperation with Insinkerator.
The company has been running a pilot project in Shanghai’s Pudong New Area since 2012. In Xiamen, kitchen sink garbage disposal units are now required in luxury apartments. A pilot project has also been initiated in Guangzhou.
The company is tapping the e-commerce market in China to promote its products directly to consumers.
