Discounts lift payments at Alipay
ALIBABA’S payment affiliate Alipay said the number of payments made via its smartphone application hit 4 million yuan (US$646,387) as of 3:30pm yesterday after the firm offered discounts at various outlets to drive revenue from offline channels.
Meanwhile, Alibaba Group’s consumer retail website Taobao has teamed up with as many as 10,000 third-party service providers, including housekeeping service firms, real estate developers, auto parts vendors and dry cleaners to boost offline services for buyers.
Shanghai residents topped other domestic cities and regions when they made over 863,000 payments via offline channels through Alipay as of 3:30pm yesterday.
At the 70 Pizza Hut outlets in Shanghai, more than 11,000 payments were made at lunch time yesterday after a maximum 50 yuan discount was offered.
Hotpot chain Haidilao also offered a maximum 50 yuan discount for consumers at its 106 outlets nationwide.
This is the fourth year that Alibaba has launched the December 12 campaign.
Taobao also offered 2 billion yuan worth of cash coupons for buyers who logged on to its mobile app through smartphones or tablets.
“We’ll step up efforts to allow small businesses to better leverage the huge traffic from mobile devices not only for online vendors but for service providers,” Zhang Jianfeng, Taobao president, said yesterday.
