Chinese retailers move up the ladder in local market, survey shows

WALMART remained the best retail partner in China for consumer goods companies, although RT Mart is quickly bridging the gap with other home grown retailers and online retailers are also catching up, a latest study shows.

As many as 58.7 percent of respondents ranked Walmart in the top three places among other retailers, followed by 58 percent for RT Mart, according to Kantar Retail's annual China PoweRanking study which polled 450 executives from retail and FMCG companies.

Yonghui jumped to the fifth place from the seventh place a year ago, thanks to clear positioning and its ambition supported by category management and understanding of specific needs of local shoppers.

For the first time, an online retailer, Yihaodian.com, made its way to the top 10, signaling the rising importance of the Internet channel and significant progress Chinese online retailers have achieved in a short period of time.

JD.com has moved up two notches to rank in the 11th position while Tmall.com skyrocketed from 59th to 15th.

Manufacturers nowadays need more specific plans to grow sales in the large cities and in more rural areas, and they're more conscious of growth and profitability prospects of trade partners, according to Kantar.

In terms of consumer goods manufacturers, Procter & Gamble, Unilever, and Coca-Cola are the top three firms.
