Companies extol value in going green

PIONEER enterprises in the promotion of environmental sustainability are being awarded at the Green Supply Chain 2017 Shanghai Summit held at Shanghai Huating Hotel today.

The summit, jointly organized by Shanghai Environmental Protection Bureau, Shanghai Society of Environmental Sciences (SSES), Shanghai Association of Enterprises with Foreign Investment (SAEFI) and Shanghai Daily, gathered 150 representatives of multinational companies, state-owned enterprises and private firms in Shanghai, as well as officials from related governmental departments and associations.

Shanghai launched a “100+ Enterprises in Green Supply Chain Program” last year in a bid to use the market’s leverage to promote the environment-friendly idea. Enterprises from all industries were encouraged to work out their own plan on a green supply chain campaign, and get their suppliers in compliance with green supply chain standards.

According to Shanghai Environmental Protection Bureau, 42 companies submitted 57 proposals of their green supply chain projects last year. After evaluations from an expert team, projects from 30 companies received awards jointly issued by China-ASEAN Environmental Cooperation Center, SSES, SAEFI and the Environmental Defense Fund of the US.

“As the public becomes increasingly aware of environmental issues, the green supply chain program has attracted more participants in 2016 compared with the previous year,” said Hu Dongwen, a researcher of Shanghai Academy of Environmental Sciences. “Among the award-winning projects last year, only one was from a domestic company. This year, we are glad to see the involvement of a bunch of jointly invested and private companies.”

In the 2017 summit award list, 39 percent of winners are foreign invested companies, while domestic, jointly owned and private firms accounted for 12 percent, 22 percent and 27 percent respectively.

Four enterprises are named the “Star of Green Supply Chain” for their leading roles in the promotion of the green idea — GE (China) Co, Shanghai International Theme Park Co, Shanghai Fosun Pharmaceutical (Group) Co and Covestro Polymers (China) Co.

Shanghai Ziheng Communications Ltd, Shanghai Chexiangjia Auto Technology Service Co and Shanghai Huanjing Information Technology Co won the “Creative Practice Awards.”

The “Low Carbon Logistics Awards” went to Delphi Automotive Systems (China) Holding Co.

Six companies including Shui On Land Ltd, Metro Jinjiang Cash & Carry Co, Shanghai Shen-Mei Beverage & Food Co, Shanghai Zhengzhang Industry Co, Okura Garden Hotel Shanghai and Newheight (Shanghai) Co became winners of the “Industry Pioneers Awards.”

Dow Chemical (China) Investment Co, Caterpillar Remanufacturing Services (Shanghai) Co, Wal-Mart Global Sourcing and Unilever China are among the eight companies to win the “Innovative Practice Awards.” Other honors include “Clean Production Awards” and “Innovative Design Awards.”

“As a world-class financial center, Shanghai houses the headquarters of a large number of international companies,” said Hu.

“Under their influence, environmental protection reforms can be efficiently promoted in their upper and lower-reach supply chains.”
