Brighter future ahead for JLR at 5th China celebration
CELEBRATING its fifth anniversary in China where it achieved great success as a late-coming challenger, Jaguar Land Rover is about to make further inroads in the largest car market of the globe.
From 10,000 units in 2010 to 122,000 units in 2014, the sales trajectory of the premium carmaker in China has been startling with Bob Grace at the helm.
During his tenure as Jaguar Land Rover’s China president, the company has been quick to recognize the nation’s fast growing and increasingly diversified demand for premium cars, establishing four regional offices, six Apprentice Training Centers, three Land Rover Experience Centers, and an extensive dealership network made up by 190 stores.
All these efforts eventually grew China into the biggest market for Jaguar Land Rover, and led to the initiation of the company’s first ever overseas manufacturing base in Changshu, Jiangsu Province last November through a joint venture with Chinese carmaker Chery.
More than 10,000 jobs have been created in China through the company’s employment, apprentice training program, sponsorship of UK arts and culture as well as charity initiatives. In May 2014, the Jaguar Land Rover China Children and Youth Dream Fund was launched as it reinforced the commitment to giving back to the local community as a responsible corporate citizen.
Having received an OBE (Order of the British Empire) earlier this year for his contribution to the auto industry and Sino-UK bilateral trade, Grace will take upon a new role as the company’s European operation head upon the completion of his assignment in China this month. Grace will celebrate his 30th anniversary of working at Jaguar Land Rover this month.
“Jaguar Land Rover has a long-term commitment to the Chinese market and we have plans to bring exciting and innovative technologies to our Chinese customers in the future. We are dedicated to making a positive contribution to Chinese society and the environment through our CSR programs, such as the Jaguar Land Rover China Children and Youth Dream Fund,” said Ralf Speth, CEO of Jaguar Land Rover.
Taking up Grace’s legacy in China will be a strengthened management team from IMSS, the integrated sales, marketing and services organization overseeing both imported and locally produced Jaguar Land Rover vehicles in China to ensure seamless brand experience. In the form of a non-legal entity, the organization explores an innovative and flexible way to align the business within a complex tangle of interested parties from the import business and local OEM side.
In an appointment announcement made by Jaguar Land Rover together with its joint venture with Chery last month, the IMSS is headed by Mark Bishop as president and James Hu as deputy president.
“Both Mark and James have a vast amount of experience in the Chinese automotive market. The auto segment in China is shifting so we have moved quickly to adjust our business in line with these changes. To ensure Jaguar Land Rover’s continuous growth in China, IMSS will strengthen the cooperation between the two partners and enhance both the import and locally-produced business,” said Andy Goss, Group Sales Operations Director of Jaguar Land Rover.
