New-energy vehicle sales to surge over 50%

CHINA’S new-energy vehicle market is expected to keep its more than 50 percent growth this year as more new models will be launched, the China Association of Automobile Manufacturers has said.
Sales of new-energy vehicles are set to grow 57 percent from 2016 to 800,000 units in 2017, said Xu Yanhua, deputy secretary-general of the association.
This year, 73 models of new-energy vehicles are expected to be launched in the market, up 80 percent year on year.
About 507,000 new-energy vehicles were sold in China in 2016, up 53 percent year on year, the Ministry of Commerce said on Thursday. Electric vehicle sales surged 65.1 percent from a year earlier to 409,000 units last year.
The growth of new-energy vehicles is powered by the government’s measures to propel the development of the new-energy car market, as part of efforts to save energy and protect the environment.
China’s annual sales of new-energy vehicles accounted for over 40 percent of the total volume of global market. China overtaken the United States to become the largest seller of new-energy cars last year. The US sold 160,000 new-energy vehicles last year.
Shanghai, Beijing, Shenzhen, Guangzhou and Chengdu were the top-five cities for sales and production of new-energy vehicles in January, according to a China City New Energy Vehicle Economy Index survey published by the Caixin magazine yesterday.
