Mercedes-Benz, Laureus boost sports charity

MERCEDES-BENZ has recently forged a strategic partnership with the Laureus Sport for Good Foundation in China to run sports charity programs for underprivileged children as part of its reinforced commitment to the country’s social welfare.

“Sport has the power to change the world.” What Nelson Mandela, the world-renowned fighter for the underprivileged, said at the 1st Laureus Worlds Sports Awards 15 years ago echoes through time at the 16th awards ceremony held yesterday.

Over the past 15 years, Mercedes-Benz, a luxury car brand owned by Daimler, has brought new life to over millions of juveniles and children through over 150 sports charity programs as a global partner of Laureus.

Now their cooperation to improve the overall quality of physical education in poverty-stricken areas will further deepen in China through Laureus Training Program and Hope School Sports Charity Program.

“China has always attached great importance to sports development. We expect to employ our unique expertise in sport charity contribute to China’s sports development. We are very confident that, with the support of Mercedes-Benz, this Foundation will be a great success in this great nation,” said Dr. Edwin Moses, chairman of the Laureus World Sports Academy.

The goal of Mercedes-Benz and Laureus in 2015 is to train PE teachers at 129 Hope Schools in China, benefitting nearly 40,000 children. By 2016, their programs will cover 400 new schools, reaching out to 1,000 PE teachers and 150,000 teenagers nationwide.

“As a founding partner of the Laureus, Daimler fully recognizes and supports its practice of promoting social development, addressing social problems and giving teenagers in trouble the opportunity to change their lives through a range of sports charity programs,” said Hubertus Troska, member of the Board of Management Daimler AG and chairman and CEO of Daimler Greater China Ltd. “The fulfillment of our corporate social responsibility is strong proof of our firm commitment to this market. We are pleased to have been able to provide support for the development of Laureus sports charity programs in China.”

On the eve of the 16th Laureus Sports Awards Ceremony, Mercedes-Benz presented 16 units of limited GLA 260 4MATIC Laureus Special Edition in honor of its strategic cooperation with the Laureus Sport for Good Foundation, which is the first charity-exclusive car model it ever makes.

All the cars will be auctioned off via China’s social platform WeChat for donation to the Mercedes-Benz Star Fund to support Laureus sports charity programs in China.

The carmaker believes that doing charity work in the name of customers can encourage more people to join it to contribute to the greater good.

Upon the establishment of its strategic partnership with Laureus China, Mercedes-Benz announced a comprehensive upgrade of its corporate social responsibility strategy.

It will grow its charity roots, Star Fund, into a more integrated funding platform to engage a variety of participants, which range from dealers, employees, car owners, professional philanthropic organizations to individuals.

“As an old Chinese saying goes, ‘unity leads to every success’,” said Nicholas Speeks, president and CEO with Beijing Mercedes-Benz Sales Service.
