E-car hire scheme opens 10 new outlets

SHANGHAI’S electric-car rental program, EVCARD, yesterday extended its network from suburban Jiading District to the downtown area by opening 10 outlets in Jing’an District.

At popular spots like Wheelock Square, CITIC Pacific Plaza, Plaza 889 and Hilton Shanghai, electric cars are available for hourly hire from 15 yuan (US$2.40) for the first 30 minutes. The rate rises by 0.50 yuan per minute after that period to a daily maximum of 180 yuan. Recharging at the outlets is free.

Registered users use their smartphones to transact and book as well as check the availability of electric cars and dedicated parking spots to return the cars and to recharge.

The program is a flexible way of commuting and is cost effective in mature European auto markets, said Cao Guangyu, deputy manager of Shanghai International Automobile City, the program operator.

By the end of this year, up to 300 EVCARD service outlets will be set up in central Shanghai, at main CBDs, transport junctions and residential developments, bringing the number of locations to 500 under the program.

A total of 3,000 electric cars will be available for rental under EVCARD by then.
