City pushing future of smart vehicles

SHANGHAI will further promote the development of the automotive electronics sector, a top Shanghai Commission of Economy and Informatization official said during an automotive forum in the city yesterday.

Commission Vice Chairman Fu Xinhua said Shanghai’s automotive electronics industry output has reached 130 billion yuan (US$18.7 billion).

The city is home to about 5,000 auto companies covering automotive electronics, telecommunications, software, car production, parts manufacture and other segments.

Shanghai will encourage more enterprises to achieve technological innovation and accelerate the development of the automotive electronics industry to facilitate development of new-energy vehicles and intelligent and connected vehicles.

“For intelligent and connected cars, automotive electronics is very important,” said Wu Guogang, director of the Electronic Information Division at the Ministry of Industry and Information Technology.

“Intelligent and connected vehicles need to have the ability to perceive the environment around and achieve intelligent computing and telecommunication. Safety is the key priority in the automotive electronics industry. We need to further enhance the safety of intelligent and connected vehicles.”

Lu Xiao, deputy general manager of the Pan Asia Technical Automotive Center Co, said the automotive industry under digital transformation is experiencing rapid development in technologies such as intelligent driving, Internet of Things, artificial intelligence and Big Data.

“Intelligent and connected vehicles will need more comprehensive safety measures and automotive electronics will play a great role in the sector,” Lu said.
